Benefits of a Gluten-Free Diet

Gluten-free diets were formerly recommended to individuals suffering from celiac disease. However, recent research by physicians and dieticians has since shown that there are many additional reasons why gluten-free diets can be beneficial.  Some of the most cited benefits include the following:

  • Improving cholesterol levels
  • Promoting digestive health
  • Increasing energy levels

Gluten-free diet foods

Although there are many great gluten-free recipes available, it is important to be able to identify foods with gluten. You may have heard of the strong link between wheat and gluten. The reason for this this link is that grains such as wheat contain high levels of gluten.

Unless you are able to find gluten-free sources, it is often wise to stay away from the following foods with gluten:

  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Desserts (cookies and cakes)
  • Oats

Instead, you should try to substitute the following foods into your diet since they are gluten free:

  • Seeds and nuts
  • Beans
  • Eggs
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Most dairy products

Switching to a gluten-free diet is becoming less of a challenge since many large grocery chains are beginning to carry gluten-free substitutes to many popular items. This means that you are still able to indulge in sweets by switching to gluten-free cakes and desserts.

Because of the growing popularity of gluten free diets, many bookstores and superstores also carry gluten-free cookbooks. However, before switching to a strictly gluten-free diet, it is a good idea to check with your physician or dietician to ensure that you won’t be depriving yourself of other nutrients that are found in foods with gluten.
